features
scroll mechanics
The page builds up as the event progresses, continually scrolling as new words emerge.
ASCII couture
The code editor is the place many digital artists spend most of their time. The app leans heavily on this aesthetic as well as referencing DOS-era color palettes.
Speech to Text
Spoken text is being written out in real-time, laying bare the machine's somewhat spotty perception of spoken language.
Live Reactions
The audience may celebrate the laureates and express their love for topics discussed by spawning bitmap hearts.
Real-Time Communication
Hosts can share their screen and are present through their voice and its visual representation. Guests are present as animated circles that change appearance according to the event's current stage.
Be kind, rewind
The event was captured live to enable playback after the fact. This allows a broader audience to experience this special evening.
under the hood
A dedicated Node.js server talks to the client app through socket.io, enabling low-latency live reactions, cursor positions and live speech transcription.
Voice and screen share is achieved through a third-party RTC service provider.
Speech to Text is done client-side, continuously sent to the server, processed and broadcast back to the audience.
process
The application was developed through a highly iterative approach, qualifying each design decision on a live prototype to establish patterns and mechanisms that serve the experience best.
